It's not as easy as it looks, but one task that pretty much anyone can do on their house is painting. When the granny flat has not been painted in awhile, you know that a painting project can be a challenge. For those who come up with the time to do it, you can save loads of money. It is best to bring in help to do the job for you, if you have to take off from your job to do it.

Paint won't last forever, and eventually it begins to peel and look horrible. In fact, your best option will be to scrape the paint off your wall. If your granny flat is really old, you may have several coats of paint, which will compound the problem. This is a more challenging job when the previous paint was an oil-based paint. Once you have the peeled paint stripped off, and scraped as best as you're able, then you need to putty the holes in the wood, spackle the bare spots in the drywall, and next, sand it as good as you can. When you are done, then remove the dust and give it an opportunity to completely dry. It is best to wait about 24 hours to completely dry.

Much older granny flats may have a problem with moisture build-up. You might find paint cracks if your home has got excessive condensation or leaks. You will see this typically in the bathroom, where mold and mildew will also grow. Even if this is normally a bathroom issue, it could happen in other parts of the house. Occasionally the house will have a leak, or shrubs that are too close. If the paint is cracking caused by moisture content, then you need to find a different option. If it's in the living space, you will need to come up with a solution that is one part bleach and three parts water to remove the paint and kill the mildew. If it is outside of the home, merely use the solution that comes with a pressure washer.

An additional issue that requires a painter, is when the color is fading, which normally happens on the exterior. This generally develops outside when you have direct sunshine almost daily. To reduce fade, don't use bright colors like red for the house. If you want a bit of statement color, check out golden or ruddy tone.

To help keep your granny flat looking nice, you should never let it get into that bad of shape. You need to take the time to repaint every few years and repair any leaks as soon as they happen.
