People will often say that American manufacturing is on the ropes. And I admit that the picture hasn't been rosy for many manufacturing sectors. Yet, there are still segments of American industry that should lead to optimism. Let's take for instance American control room furniture manufacturing.

Why control room furniture? The first thing you should know is that furniture is categorized as a durable good. And if you didn't already know, durable goods are important economic indicators. The idea is that companies purchase more durable goods when their confidence in the economy is strong. On the other hand, if a company is lacking confidence in the economy, they will not purchase these types of goods. To put it simply, buying long-term products such as these implies that the buyer foresees a healthy economy lasting the life of the product. More immediately, there is a strong relationship between durable goods and gross domestic product.

Consider this good news. Furniture factory orders increased double digits for this April compared with last April. The numbers are usually compared year-to-year like this, since month-to-month can create lopsided data. This April compared to last April, shipments and order backlogs increased by similar percentages. These April numbers are unusually high, but the first four months, when compared with the same period last year, are 5% above. These are significant numbers. Take into account that overall, durable goods orders vary by less than one percent most years.

Allow me to point out that these figures are for the consumer furnishings sector. But I think they mirror control room furniture orders to scale. The reason is that durable goods shipments also factor into GDP. Given that shipments in the consumer sector were up 6%, we can assume that the growth trend is relatively generalized.

Looking at the numbers here, it looks as though American industry is in good health. If you take a look at niche markets such as control room furniture, future growth looks plausible. This growth is attributable to American companies like Inracks in Buffalo, NY who have remained committed to the ideal of Made in the USA.
