Maybe one of the most common occurrences that happens in a public speaking situation is to see someone in the audience go to sleep on youWhen you are the one going to sleep, you just hope the speaker doesn’t notice. But when you are the speaker, you know that you do notice and you wonder what you are doing wrong.  You worked hard on your speech and you thought it was pretty interesting stuff.  So why do they doze off?

The outcome is the administration of the school often lives in fear of failing in one of these many state level requirements for fear of losing funding or some other form of punishmentAnd that fear is passed along to the students.

Well you are in good company if you see that happenFor some reason this phenomenon happens routinely in churches all over the country every Sunday morning.  And that preacher is a skilled public speaker who you would think could keep that crowd riveted.  But in many public situations, even when the speaker has decades of experience, he may still not know how to keep that audience awakeThat is because there is a public speaking technique that if you learn it early, you will be come of the rare public speakers that routinely is considered to be "great" no matter what the quality of your material.

Fear is also a culture of a school that is overcrowdedThe simple fact is that even if the teacher of a particular course is creative and loves being with students and filling their minds with the joy of learning, if you overwhelm that teacher with more students than he or she should reasonably have in class, the emphasis of the classroom shifts from learning to keeping orderAnd when that change of priority takes place, fear is the primary tool used to maintain order so the information can be presented to the students.

That technique is quite simply how you use your voice.  The voice is a marvelous tool.  It has the power to express emotions, complex ideas, humor or outrageAnd yet for some reason, many public speakers when they stand up to do a formal presentation loose 90% of the expression in their voices.  All of a sudden we all start to sound like a boring math teacher droning on in a monotone even if the subject we are talking about is very interesting, human or emotionalYou could talk about the day you fell in love or how to skydive but if you say it in a monotone, you are going to put people to sleep.
+
Sadly, if students are in that room after being intimidated and threatened, even the best of student will close his or her mind to learningIf you are a parent and you sit in on a class to see how well the craft of teaching is carried out, you come away with the misperception that the class was well run if the students sit quietly staring forward while the teacher lays out bland information for them to adsorb and write downIf young people sit quietly and do not interact with the teacher, they are doing so out of fear.  And fear is one of the worst teaching tools there is.

You have a lot of vocal tone available to you that you naturally use when you speak person to person and you are relaxed.  What causes speakers to switch to a monotone or a reduced amount of vocal tones when speaking formally starts with nervousness.  You are so focused on speaking clearly so you are understood that you end up sounding like you are reading the phone book.  This is especially true if you have your entire speech written out and you are reading it.  The strange thing is you would never read like that to childrenIt's strange we fall back to that style of speaking when talking to a group of adults.
+
Private schools have the opportunity to create a better learning environment for their students because traditionally private schools have a lower teacher to student ratio so interaction is encouraged and fear is not needed to maintain order in the classroomBut even then to foster an atmosphere of discussion and learning, you must have teachers who are talented at leading group discussions, who write their curriculums to include interaction as a teaching tool and who are not afraid of the students.

Two great exercises can be used to help you get control over your vocal range as you speak. It really isn't something you want to think a lot about when you are in front of people because then you will become self consciousBut listen to other speakers and think about how they can improve their range of vocal tones.  That will help you process your own range of expression.  But also practice your presentation focusing on the ideas themselves but also on how you say themDon’t be afraid to express emotions while speakingIf the subject is exciting, be excited.  If it's troubling, be troubledBe a human in front your audience will respond.

Fear goes two ways in a school situationIf the student body is frightening to ach other, very often they are also frightening to the teachersThis is the setting where gangs develop in school cultures or where the culture of student life deteriorates to where troubled students can impose fear on othersIn this day and age of school shootings and other violence related campus outbreaks, if the school allows that kind of culture to grow up, it is very difficult to get it under controlAnd just as fear from the top down destroys the love of learning, fear from the student body up destroys a teachers ability to communicate his or her love of the subject matter openly and leads to dull and uninteresting classrooms which only makes matters worse.

In addition, you can add a lot of variety to your presentation varying the volume with which you speak and the speed. As with controlling fear due to overcrowding, private schools also have the edge in controlling fear coming from the student body.  Private schools are not required to keep any students that they don’t feel fit the culture of the school.  Each and every parent and student sign contracts agreeing not to become disruptive in action, dress or attitude and what is disruptive is left to the school to determine.  So private schools can remove students who are a threat and with their removal, the fear of harm goes as well.
